Yep, that is right, The Greenbrier River Trail and Greenbrier River extend the length of Pocahontas County, WV and are in the center of the National Radio Quiet Zone and the Monongahela National Forest. So it is quiet here, very quiet. That makes it a super enjoyable getaway and place to disconnect from a hectic lifestyle and reconnect with the people and places that can rejuvenate you. The southern portion of the trail extends south into Greenbrier County, WV.


Cell phone coverage is limited to more centralized communities in Pocahontas County. AT&T is the primary provider in Marlinton, Hillsboro and at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. T Mobile and Verison available in Marlinton. Otherwise,, you will be one with nature, enjoying your family, friends and the scenic natural beauty around you.

Cell phone coverage is more widely available south of Seebert into Caldwell, White Sulphur Springs & Lewisburg areas with major carrier service available.


Wifi is available in many businesses around Pocahontas and Greenbrier Counties. If you want to call home, make sure you have your wifi calling set up before you leave home so you can check in while you are away.


GPS can be tricky in our beautiful rural area so prepare before you leave home. Download your directions to your phone, check the directions, and remember that the shortest route on your favorite map app might not be the easiest route. Our point-to-point service locations are all located on main West Virginia highways. It is rare you will ever need to be on dirt or gravel roads unless your lodging location is off the beaten path. If you are lodging in Pocahontas County,, please check with your lodging host for the best driving directions. Greenbrier River water levels vary from north to south and month to month. The river is usually lower the farther north you put in to enjoy the longest free flowing river east of the Mississippi. Spring is the most popular time to enjoy the river. Greenbrier River Trail State Park is a 78-mile former railroad now used for hiking, biking and horseback riding. It is the longest trail of its kind in West Virginia and features 35 bridges, two tunnels and some of West Virginia’s most remote area. Marlinton, West Virginia is the Pocahontas County seat. Marlinton Trailhead marker 56 provides:

Seebert, West Virginia is a small community at the midway of our primary service area. Located adjacent to the river and Watoga State Park. Mile marker 45 provides these services:

  • Lodging in Seebert and Watoga State Park

  • Camping and RV sites at Watoga State Park – Riverside Campground

  • Jack Horner’s Corner: Pizza, subs, ice cream seasonally; bicycle and kayak rental; souvenir shop; wifi

  • Hillsboro is about 6 miles away

  • AT&T service – weak

Caldwell, West Virginia is the southern trail head for the GRT at mile marker 3. Services are available nearby:

  • Cabins and camping at Greenbrier State Park is 4 miles east from the trail head

  • Restaurants and lodging in White Sulphur Springs, WV 6.5 miles east from Caldwell

  • Restaurants and lodging in Lewisburg, WV is 3.5 miles from Caldwell trail head

Other trail head parking and put-in locations are along the trail and river. GRS does provide custom point-to-point service to these locations however keep in mind no guest services are available at these trail heads.
